The five speeches, recorded in order:

Over to the audience:

The Debate in pictures...

We need to provide training opportunities…. high grade vocational training. Especially for young men’ - David Willetts MP Havant, Conservative

Can you, as individuals, defend the difference between where you are - and I would suggest we have a relatively affluent group here -and where the poor in this city are?’ - David Carpenter, Lecturer, Portsmouth University

"It is vital that the basic state pension starts being moved up substantially" - Lord Oakeshott

I don’t want to work in a city where everyone who gets the good jobs comes from outside…. I want people in Portsmouth to be trained and encouraged to compete for those jobs’ - Carole Damper, Roberts Centre, Portsmouth

‘Children’s Centres, Sure Start, .. are all great but we haven’t got enough and we’re going to have another generation before we see the benefit of it.’ - Sarah McCarthy Fry

Bob White, summed up with a challenge for all : ‘We need to go on having the debate but we also need to go on doing something about it… There are lots of ways and all of us can do something. If you have listened to the debate and it’s triggered a thought in your head, then commit yourself today to doing something about it.’
