Join The Team

We are always looking for enthusiastic, creative people to join our team of brilliant volunteers at Express FM.

As a community radio station that is just as proud as you are to live in the great waterfront city, we host the official Portsmouth Football Club coverage, showcase local stories, charities, and people as well as provide a wide range of specialist music programmes that celebrate our cultural diversity.

Many former Express FM volunteers have gone on to launch their media careers at the BBC, Global, Bauer, News UK and other commercial radio networks.

If you're an enthusiastic local person with a passion for life in Pompey - and perhaps also sport or music - we would love to hear from you! You don't need prior broadcasting experience and you will recieve technical, presentation and compliance training from professionals within the team.

There are a number of specific roles that we're actively seeking new volunteers for - take a look below and fill in the form if you think you'd be a good fit.

Features Presenter: Flexible

We're looking for a range of voices to contribute to our on-air local "what's on" guides, recording general entertainment / family events throughout the day and / or youth-focused items for our Club Guide overnight.

You will be given access to the information and deliver short (20-30 seconds) summaries for broadcast at regular intervals, making your voice one of the most frequently heard on Express FM.

Production Assistant: Flexible

As our team is largely made up of volunteers, it's often all hands on deck to provide the best possible local radio service for Portsmouth and a lot is involved behind the scenes.

From booking guests to highlighting key events in the city, assisting with outside broadcasts to keeping our website, socials and podcast feeds updated, any team player with any spare time would be more than welcome because, quite simply, Express FM would not exist without you.

While prior experience in any particular field is a bonus, this is not essential and we will always support you with the necessary training to develop your skillset. It's not as hard as it may seem... we promise!

Express Hits Presenter: Flexible

Express Hits focuses on the biggest tunes of the moment together with 00s and 10s throwbacks and community-orientated speech for a 15-34 demographic overnight on Express FM.

We're looking for someone in-touch with pop culture who can bring energy and enthusiasm to this show. It's the ideal opportunity for a local student, influencer or anyone looking to broaden their horizons and further their career as a content creator for young audiences.

You will have access to our Winston Churchill Avenue studios and be able to book a time that suits you to come in and voice-track (pre-record) your show.

Multimedia Reporter: Flexible

Portsmouth news, information and stories is our primary point of difference at Express FM and we're looking for talented trainee or qualified journalists to help deliver more of this content, both on the radio and via our digital platforms.

If you're a talented writer with a passion for local life or someone who loves meeting new people and learning new things, we'd love to hear from you!

Pompey Live / Sport Production Assistant: Flexible

Express FM is the exclusive home of Pompey Live, providing commentary of every Portsmouth FC game with all the build-up, half-time and full-time analysis.

It's a huge team effort - from scripting to researching, technical operating to editing, there's so much for you to get involved with.

While some roles are voluntary, the studio tech-op responsible for execution of the live broadcast is a paid opportunity.

Cover Presenter: Flexible

We're always looking for new versatile volunteers to join the team as cover for daytime shows. These friendly voices are heard in offices, cars, homes and shops in Portsmouth throughout the week.

Generally, this programming is packed with great music and community-orientated speech, for a 35-54 demographic, as well a touch of silliness. You will be an entertaining and relatable storyteller that brings life to goings on in the city and celebrates local people.

You will have access to our Winston Churchill Avenue studios and have the option of either booking a time that suits you to come in and voice-track (pre-record) a show or presenting it live.

All these roles are voluntary and we would never expect you to alter personal plans or work commitments to suit us. We aim to be as flexible as possible in accommodating your availability and needs. Increasingly, responsibilities at Express FM are able to be carried out remotely, but some would require you to be studio-based.

As of July 2023, legal and compliance training is mandatory for anyone who appears on-air at Express FM. If you're applying for a presentation role, please attach an audio demo (5 minutes max) as this enables us to get you on-air more quickly if we can - but it's fine if you don't yet have one.

We aim to respond to everyone who contacts us as soon as possible.
