This evening's FA Cup 3rd Round draw has been completed and the Blues will be travelling to Ashton Gate to take on Bristol City in January!
The tie will be played between Friday the 8th and Monday the 11th of January, 2021.
Kenny Jackett's side blew away National League outfit King's Lynn Town in the Second Round, defeating The Linnets by 6 goals to 1 at Fratton Park. Goals from Rasmus Nicolaisen, Tom Naylor, Sean Raggett, Marcus Harness, Ellis Harrison and Jordi Hiwula confirmed Pompey's place in Round 3 for a third season running.
Ipswich Town were on the wrong side of a controversial extra-time goal in Round 1 on November the 7th. Sean Raggett tapped in from less than a yard out to clinch the Blues a dramatic victory at Portman Road, though was fortunate that the linesman failed to see he was in an offside position.
At this stage last season, Pompey had beaten non-league sides Harrogate Town and Altrincham to set up a clash with League One promotion rivals Fleetwood Town in the Third Round. James Bolton and John Marquis helped the Blues to a 2-1 win at Highbury Stadium, with Barnsley confirmed as the opponents for Round 4 just days later. That game was played on home turf and the Blues weren't expected to progress any further, due to Barnsley playing in a higher division, though Pompey defied the odds and won the match 4-2. This then set up a mouth-watering 5th Round tie at home to Premier League outfit, and eventual winners Arsenal, who came away 2-0 victors.
Portsmouth's next opponents, Bristol City, currently sit 6th in the Championship and will be aiming to gain promotion to the Premier League come the end of the season.
The last competitive meeting between these two sides ended in a 0-0 draw at Fratton Park on March the 17th, 2012.
The Blues and The Robins were scheduled to play out a friendly prior to this campaign, though that match on August the 29th was cancelled due to Pompey and Stevenage agreeing to bring their Carabao Cup First Round tie forward.
As always, full coverage of the 3rd Round tie between Bristol City and Portsmouth will be LIVE on 93.7 Express FM - Liam Howes, Jake Smith and Ryan Stillwell will be on hand with full pre-match build-up before handing over to Radio Solent, who will provide uninterrupted kick-by-kick commentary.
Jake will be calling two Blues supporters to preview the match LIVE on The Football Hour between 6 & 7pm on Friday the 8th of January, 2021, unless TV broadcasters change the date of the game.
