Portsmouth Football Club has announced that Danny Cowley will remain as Pompey head coach after agreeing a new long-term contract.
His younger brother Nicky has also signed a deal to continue in his role as assistant head coach. The duo arrived at Fratton Park in the middle of March with the side sitting 10th in the table and helped inspire an upturn in form.
They led the Blues to the brink of securing a League One play-off spot, although a final day defeat to Accrington saw them ultimately finish in 8th position.
Pompey chairman Michael Eisner said: “We are thrilled to continue with the Cowley brothers leading our team on the pitch.
“Their dedication and hard work, plus their exciting style of play, makes them a perfect match for Portsmouth and our fans. And I thank them for coming in on such short notice to help us this season.”
Chief executive Mark Catlin added: “Everyone is naturally hurting at this moment in time, but securing the services of Danny and Nicky is a huge positive. I am sure that they will be both backed by the club and our supporters as they plot a course for the 2021/22 season.”
Danny and Nicky Cowley said: “It has been one of the greatest privileges of our lives to be associated with this club.
“In the short time that we have been here, we have seen the love and passion that the people of Portsmouth have for this football club. With the support of Michael and the board of directors we will create a team that you can be proud of.
“We will work relentlessly to create a high-performance environment for the players, and consequently the club, to enjoy consistent success. Our ambition is to develop players and staff on a daily basis, while playing fast, attacking – and, most importantly, winning – football. For this club, today is about new beginnings. While we will always take learnings from the past, we are absolutely determined to live in the moment and enjoy the challenges that this journey will bring.
One thing is for sure – we cannot do this alone. It is your support that defines us as a football club and we will need you beside us every step of the way!”
The Cowley brothers were previously in charge of Concord Rangers and Braintree before enjoying great success at Lincoln.
Victory at top-flight Burnley saw the Imps become the first non-league side to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals for more than 100 years.
The duo also guided Lincoln to National League and League Two titles before moving to Huddersfield and steering them to Championship safety.
Over the course of this week, discussions will now take place with players and backroom staff, and the club will update supporters in due course.
Jake Smith will be LIVE from 6 O'Clock this evening (Monday 10th May) with Jamie Spencer and Josh Sweetman on The Football Hour to discuss this big news, as well as to review Sunday's defeat at Fratton.
