Portsmouth Football Club are back in the 2nd tier of English football after 12 years away.
A 3-2 victory over Barnsley on Tuesday (April 16th) evening confirmed promotion for the Blues to the Championship after 7 seasons in League One.
Pompey have not been in the Championship since they were relegated from it in 2012, since spending 1 single season in League One and suffering back-to-back relegations to end up in League Two, where they remained until automatic promotion was sealed in April 2017.
It has taken 7 seasons for Portsmouth to escape from the 3rd tier - The closest they had come was in the 2018/19 season with 88 points collected, only good enough that year for 4th place and a Play-Off place.
Twice had the Blues been in the League One Play-Offs and twice they fell short at the Semi-Final stage. In 2019, Sunderland beat Pompey across 2 legs to reach the Final at Wembley and the following year it was Oxford United who made it through at the expense of Portsmouth, though that came via a penalty shoot-out behind closed doors at the Kassam Stadium.
Whilst in League One, Pompey also made it through to 2 EFL Trophy Finals, winning the competition with a penalty shoot-out victory over Sunderland in 2019 and losing from the spot to Salford City in the 2020 version, which was delayed to and played without fans in attendance in March 2021 due to COVID-19.
