Late heartbreak at the Coventry Building Society Arena sees Portsmouth lose another away match in the Championship.
It’s yet another defeat on the road for John Mousinho’s side, as Pompey still remain in 17th place, just 3 points above the championship relegation zone, which could have been stretched to four had the Blues managed to hold on at the end.
Pompey had chances to win the game, with one of those chances coming just seconds before Paterson’s winner, but Cohen Bramall was unable to score his first Portsmouth goal and the Blues were later punished down the other end.
Coventry manager Frank Lampard was supposed to serve a touchline ban in tonight’s encounter, after he was sent off after an altercation with the referee in Coventry’s 2-1 loss at home to Burnley on Saturday.
The former Chelsea midfielder however was able to be in the dugout for this fixture because his charge for dismissal was yet to be processed by The FA.
On his first Portsmouth start striker Thomas Waddingham had two chances inside just the opening five minutes, but Brad Collins was able to deny the Australian forward on both occasions.
The Sky Blues could have had a penalty down the other end when Tatsuhiro Sakamoto's effort at goal struck the arm of Andre Dozzell, but referee Gavin Ward decided against pointing to the spot.
Frustrations for Coventry continued to brew in the early stages of this tie, when Victor Torp was subbed off with an ankle injury 20 minutes gone.
The Danish midfielder's ankle was caught by the foot of Dozzell and subsequently Torp was stretchered off for club captain Ben Sheaf.
Pompey then had one of the best chances to open the score so far, but captain Regan Poole had his header denied by the crossbar following Josh Murphy’s in-swinging corner.
The visitors then had another opportunity to take the lead moments later, after Cohen Bramall found Colby Bishop in the area, but the forward’s shot at goal was blocked away by the hosts.
Jack Rudoni then had two chances to give Coventry a one-nil lead, with his second going just over the bar after his header from Mason-Clark’s ball inside half an hour.
Murphy found himself one on one with Collins, but the winger's left-footed shot at goal went wide of the post on the stroke of half-time.
An additional three minutes of added time were added on to the end of the first 45 minutes.
Half-time: Coventry 0-0 Portsmouth
Portsmouth made a double substitution ten minutes inside the second half, with Jordan Williams and Thomas Waddingham coming off for Terry Devlin and Mark O’Mahony.
United States International Haji Wright fired a shot at goal an hour gone, but Portsmouth keeper Nicholas Schmid was there to parry the ball wide and out for a corner.
Schmid then came off his line and nearly gave Coventry a gift of a goal, but Regan Poole came to the Austrian shot stopper’s aid to clear the ball away.
Both sides made subs of their own, with Portsmouth bringing on Matt Ritchie for Adil Aouchiche and Coventry bringing striker Ellis Simms on for winger Tatsuhiro Sakamoto with twenty minutes to go.
The ball fell to Milan Van Ewijk outside the area, but the Dutch right-back’s hit into the area was blocked away from the Portsmouth defence with the clock ticking.
Portsmouth made their fourth and final sub of the evening, with Newcastle loanee Issac Hayden coming on for Andre Dozzell in the midfield with just five minutes of normal time remaining.
Coventry also made their final subs of the night, with Jamie Paterson coming on for Ephron Mason-Clark and Haji Wright was replaced by Norman Bassette who scored in the reverse fixture at Fratton Park back in December.
City almost won it at the end, but Liam Kitching's header from a Sky Blues corner was cleared off the line by Portsmouth with just minutes remaining.
And it was with the final kick of the game that Coventry snatched the three points away from Portsmouth when sub Jamie Paterson finished off Jack Rudoni’s pass to win it in the ninety-fourth minute.
Full-time: Coventry 1-0 Portsmouth
Next up: Portsmouth welcome John Eustace’s Derby County to Fratton Park this Saturday in what will be a must win for John Mousinho’s side if they want to avoid potentially being dragged back into the Championship relegation zone.
In the reverse fixture, Derby were managed by Paul Warne, however the Friday Night game at Pride Park was one of Pompey’s most unforgettable performances of the season when the Blues were smashed 4-0 by The Rams.
Can Pompey get back to winning ways at home just like they have had to do on multiple occasions this campaign, against a Derby side that now sit just above the bottom three in 21st place.
