Pompey are knocked out of The FA Cup by League One opposition.

There will be no distractions left for John Mousinho’s side in their bid for survival in the Championship this season.

Pompey will play on the weekend of The FA Cup Fourth Round, after their opponents on the 8th February - Sheffield United were defeated 1-0 by Cardiff City at Bramall lane last night.

The 2008 winners have now failed to progress into the next round of footballs oldest competition for the second time in two years, with John Mousinho still yet to win an FA Cup fixture as a manager.

High flying Wycombe in League One will be hoping for a Premier League draw in the fifth round, to complement their successful season in League one this campaign under Matt Bloomfield.

It was a total of nine changes from Mousinho after the Blues 1-0 defeat away at Sunderland last Sunday, with Paddy Lane and ex Chair boys Loanee Freddie Potts being the only players to keep their spot in the starting Eleven.

Wycombe also made a large amount of changes after their defeat to Huddersfield in League one just three days ago.

Resting key players like Richard Kone and Ipswich loanee Cameron Humphreys who have been pivotal to their current position in the second of the two promotion spots in the third tier.

Portsmouth despite the defeat, were on top the opening then minutes, with Potts controlling the midfield and pinging the ball out to Lane on the left flank and Christian Saydee up front.

Wycombe had to make a change very early on, when inside just seven minutes back up keeper Shamal George went down in comfort and had to be subbed off for ex Manchester United goalie Nathan Bishop.

On seventeen minutes a classic Wycombe long ball was played onto the right hand side, causing chaos for Jordan Williams who filled in at right back and Rob Atkinson making his first Pompey start after the two lost track of Brandon Hanlan, who squeezed the ball past Jordan Archer at his near post to make it 1-0 to Wanderers.

Pompey had lost any momentum they had the opening moments of the game, when Paddy Lane gave away a free kick of the edge of the penalty area twenty five minutes in after failing to get the ball forward onto an attack.

The number 32’s two footed challenge was free hit for Luke Leahy, who’s set piece was lobbed on to a plate for ex Portsmouth defender Sonny Bradley who headed home to make it two-nil to The Chairboys, just days after joining on loan from Derby County earlier in the week.

Half-time: Wycombe Wanderers 2-0 Portsmouth

It was a total of three changes at half time that were made by Mousinho, brining off Rob Atkinson who got a much needed half of football in his legs, he was off for Ryley Towler.

Also off was arguably Pompey’s best player all game Freddie Potts was brought off for Andre Dozzell in midfield.

And keeper Jordan Archer was off for Nicholas Schmid who was rested ahead of kick off, but the Austrian made an immediate return inbetween the sticks ahead of the second half.

Just after the hour mark, Jordan Williams came off for Zack Swanson, giving the former Barnsley defender some much needed game time following his return from injury.

Portsmouth had chances to pull one back and they won a comer just after the hour mark, which was headed wide by Towler.

However, the corner’s action was more focused on a scuffle between Daniel Harvie who had his arms up in Saydee’s face, causing the two to wrestle each other to the ground.

Referee Tom Reeves awarded the pair a yellow card just before the corner was taken and was a missed change for Portsmouth to claw a goal back.

Then one of the other very few positives  to pick from for Portsmouth this evening, was a debut for Harry Clout who came on for Paddy Lane with fifteen minutes of normal time to play.

The Pompey under 18’s winger who was offered a scholarship last summer, had some lively spells on the left wing, taking on his man numerous times showing some bright patches on the attack.

Full-time: Wycombe Wanderers 2-0 Portsmouth

Next up: Portsmouth continue their streak without a win away from home in all competitions to almost 3 months, but John Mousinho’s side will get an immediate chance to break that streak this Wednesday as the Blues travel to Ewood Park to visit Blackburn Rovers.

It’s minimal days off for Pompey with the rearranged Championship fixture from the back end of November taking place on the 15th January.

That visit to Lancashire will then be followed up with a return at Fratton Park next weekend as they welcome high flying Middlesbrough to round off what will be a busy week on the pitch and a busy time off it.

Sporting director Richard Hughes will be hoping to add to today’s loan signing of Isaac Hayden who joins on loan for the remainder of the season from Premier League Newcastle.
