British Apples and Pears donates 5000 apples to Hampshire-based social care charity, Community Integrated Care

Social care charity Community Integrated Care has paid thanks to horticultural trade body, British Apples and Pears, and Portsmouth FC’s charity, Pompey in the Community Trust, after the organisations came together to facilitate a donation of 5000 ‘Jazz’ apples to social care workers and people supported by the charity.

Donated by the growers of Worldwide Fruit ltd, the British-grown produce was delivered by volunteers from Pompey in the Community Trust to a number of Community Integrated Care’s supported living services across Hampshire. At the charity’s request, a stock of the donated fruit was also distributed to help other isolated individuals and important groups in the local community.

“The health and wellbeing of our people is incredibly important, so it has been fantastic to offer this donation of fresh fruit to our services, “ said John Hughes, Director of Partnerships and Communities at Community Integrated Care.

“To have received such a generous donation from British Apples and Pears and Worldwide Fruit is truly humbling. It means a lot for our colleagues and the people we support to know that people are thinking of them in such challenging times. ”

“We are also immensely grateful to our partners at Pompey in the Community Trust, for their amazing work in getting this donation out to our services and other important local causes. Their hard work and support at such a busy time for our charity is greatly appreciated.”

Ali Capper, Executive Chair of British Apples and Pears, said: “It has never been more important to ensure our key workers are getting the healthy and nutritious food and drink they need to keep going.  An apple is not only one of your five a day - it is also packed full of health benefits, making it the ideal snack.  We are pleased to have been able to help these important key workers with an apple a day.”

Claire Martin, Director of Community Projects at Pompey in the Community Trust, said: “At such a pressing time, charities need to support each other, so we were pleased to support our friends at Community Integrated Care in this endeavour and help spread some much needed cheer during this difficult time. There were big smiles at every place we visited, as people were delighted with this surprise donation.”

Community Integrated Care is one of the UK’s largest health and social care charities. It provides care and support to thousands of people across England and Scotland with a diverse range of care needs, including learning disabilities, autism, mental health concerns and dementia.
