Free heritage walk around Portsea on Saturday

Members of the public are invited to join a walk this weekend around Portsmouth to share their views on the city’s heritage.

The Portsea Heritage Walk will be led by maritime history and heritage property expert Dr Ann Coats from the University of Portsmouth.

The route will explore a trail from The Hard to Victoria Park connecting heritage and green places. Walkers will be asked what they like, what they dislike and what needs to be improved.

Dr Coats of the School of Civil Engineering and Surveying said: “The aim of this walk is to gather ideas and opinions from the public about what heritage places should be included, what might be proposed to improve green spaces and how to link these places by walking.”

Dr Coats has published numerous papers and books on maritime and heritage and is also chair of the Naval Dockyards Society, which she founded in 1996. Since 2013 she has run the Portsea Heritage Project to engage students in the heritage of Portsea residents.

Cllr Stephen Morgan, the city’s first ever heritage champion, is backing the project and planning to attend. He said: “Portsmouth has a rich and diverse heritage. I am looking forward to joining other local people on this walk around some of Portsea’s assets and working with Ann and her team to develop this project and celebrate our heritage offer and make it more accessible for all local people.”

The walk takes place at 10am on Saturday 22 April. It is free and open to all, and will last around two hours. Refreshments will be provided halfway at St George’s Church.
