Free kids' events in Portsmouth's Victoria Park throughout August

Portsmouth's Victoria Park is hosting free afternoon events for children next month, to help fight the boredom that the summer holidays brings!

There's no need to book for the events, which are aimed at five to 11 year-olds. Families can just turn up and join in the fun.

The events are being run by Portsmouth City Council. Cllr Linda Symes, its Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport, said: "Victoria Park is such a lovely setting for families, and it's great to make use of it by holding events like this."

The events are:

Wednesday 2 August, 1pm–3pm

A craft event following the theme of this year's library summer reading challenge, Animal Agents. Make your own agents using your finger prints, and use deerstalker hats and magnifying glasses to turn them into Sherlock Holmes. Take your animal home or put it on display in the Central Library children's area.

Wednesday 9 August, 12pm and 3pm

Booster Cushion Theatre (pictured) presents Little Red Riding Hood and Friends, a comical mixture of fairytales with lots of participation, including wolf auditions and dancing a conga with Cinderella.

Wednesday 16 August, 1pm–3pm

Is Sherlock a man, woman or an animal – or something else? You decide in this fun activity, as you create your very own detective
