The Junior and Mini Great South Run return to Portsmouth on Saturday 17 October and entries are now open.
The 2.5k Junior event and 1.5k Mini running events are part of a packed two days of sport on the south coast for the Great South Run, the world’s leading 10-mile run.
Taking place in Southsea and starting and finishing on Clarence Esplanade over 1,000 children between 3-15 years old get the chance to experience their finish line feeling as they take on a 1.5k and 2.5k route around Southsea Common.
The Junior and Mini events start and finish close to the Blue Reef Aquarium and fancy dress is encouraged with on-the-spot prizes. All participants also get a t-shirt and the chance to show off their medal with pride, just like the adults. It’s not only about the running though as participants get the chance to experience unrivalled local support and quality entertainment on course, crossing the finish line on the city’s scenic seafront, with beautiful views of the Solent.
The events form part of a weekend where 25,000 people descend on Portsmouth to celebrate everything great about the city across 17 and 18 October.
The 2.5k Junior run is for 9-15 years and the 1.5k Mini run is for 3-8 years who are recommended to participate with an adult. Those aged 9 and over can run alone, but anyone aged 15 and under should be accompanied by an adult on the day.
This year to coincide with the 40th staging of the Great North Run organisers will unveil an official Great Run Mascot. We would, therefore, like to invite young people to demonstrate their creativity and passion for sport, by developing an original design of the future, official Great Run mascot. 3-15-year-olds are being asked to submit their original mascot drawing, giving the mascot a name and a back story – describing what the mascot likes, what they do and where they are from. More details and entry forms are available at GreatRun.org/JuniorMini.
