Portsmouth City Council layout plans for £60million regeneration of Portsmouth city centre

A new city centre road is the first step towards significant growth for Portsmouth's economy according to Leader of the city council.

At the launch of a public consultation on proposals for a new road layout Cllr Donna Jones outlined aspirations for the growth the plans could kick-start and how this will benefit the city centre and Commercial Road.

Cllr Jones, who is also the council's Cabinet Member for Planning, Regeneration & Economic Development, said: "We have an ambitious vision for the city that will see new uses of our city centre space: more retail, new homes, office space and tourism attractions. Residents would benefit from new jobs and leisure facilities and the first step towards this happening could be the new city centre road layout.

"Realigning the road enables areas currently separated by busy traffic to become one cohesive space people can enjoy. This will ensure the existing Commercial Road area becomes part of a bigger city centre development area. It'll be easier for everyone to get around whether they drive, cycle, walk or use public transport and will create nicer public spaces for everyone to enjoy.

"Redeveloping the city centre and Commercial Road is one of our top priorities and I'm delighted plans are progressing. We now want to hear everyone's opinions on what has the potential to make the area a nicer place to live, work and visit."

The Portsmouth City Council led proposals will realign the main route from the M275 to allow easy access to the whole of the city centre and open up a number of sites for future development.

The plans will also make it easier to get to and from different parts of the city centre, improve the area for everyone and make it a nicer place to work live and visit.

The plans are available to view on the council's website and the deadline for feedback is Thursday 2 November.

Anyone without internet access can see the proposals in the Civic Offices reception or any Portsmouth library.

Public information sessions, providing the opportunity to talk to people involved in developing the plans, will be held in Cascades Shopping Centre, near the entrance to TK Maxx, from 9am to 6pm on Thursday 19 and Saturday 21 October.

There will also be information displays in the Civic Offices reception and the café area of 1000 Lakeside, North Harbour.

The information gained from the consultation will be used to inform a planning application and, once it is submitted, the public will have the chance to comment on it as part of the usual process.
