Over 720,000 people in the wider Hampshire area are at risk of osteoporosis and it is estimated that the condition could cause up to 16,000 fractures a year in the region at a cost to local health services of £58m.
The Love Your Bones roadshow was launched today, Monday 16th July, at Queen Alexandra Hospital. The two week tour will travel across Hampshire with bone health experts from Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust and the National Osteoporosis Society on hand to offer advice.
People in Hampshire will be given the chance to check and see if they are at risk of osteoporosis. The two week bus tour will stop at many different locations until reaching the New Forest Show towards the end of July.
It was an exciting day at the launch of the tour, with the Rheumatology Team from QA Hospital and representatives from the National Osteoporosis Society coming along, as well as Chief Executive, Mark Cubbon and Chair, Melloney Poole attending.
Colin Beevor, Matron at QA Hospital, said: “The annual Love Your Bones event has been held at the Mountbatten Centre for 11 years and to mark us reaching the 12 year milestone we decided to go on the road. It has been a brilliant launch with the sun coming out to celebrate with us. Make sure you come see us at one of the venues over the next two weeks or come along to the New Forest Show where we will be on hand to offer bone health advice.”
