The Lord Mayor of Portsmouth takes on Emirates Spinnaker Tower Big Drop Challenge

The Lord Mayor of Portsmouth and six Hampshire Mayors will take part in a terrifying challenge at Gunwharf Quays on Sunday 30th April.

Raising money for their respective charity appeals, visitors to the centre can watch the ‘Magnificent Seven’ abseil 100 meters down Portsmouth’s iconic Emirates Spinnaker Tower.

The main event will take place at 11.30am with Councillor David Fuller leading the way, followed by the Mayors of Havant, Gosport, Eastleigh, Winchester, East Hampshire and Southampton. The Harmony Men Male Voice Choir from Jersey will serenade the group with their varied repertoire of traditional male choir songs, operatic pieces, folk songs and classic hymns.

Councillor Fuller said: "I am the first Lord Mayor of Portsmouth to abseil down the tower and even though I am terrified of heights, I have received tremendous encouragement from friends, colleagues and my main sponsor, Swinton Insurance. We are all taking part to raise money for a number of incredibly important local charities including The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity, Help 4 Special Children and The Oncology and Haematology department at Queen Alexandra Hospital. We hope to support with purchasing a state-of-the-art blood testing machine that will provide results within 10 minutes, rather than the present 4-5 hour wait."

Visitors to Gunwharf Quays on Sunday 30th April will also be able to enjoy a classic car display with 60 stunning cars on display from the 1950s through to the 1980s. Enthusiasts will be able to relive their youth with a selection of vintage vehicles on display.

Colin Wilding, General Manager at Gunwharf Quays, said: "The Big Drop Challenge is set to be quite a spectacle and we are thrilled to support with some fantastic entertainment in the form of the classic car display. Of course, visitors will also be able to enjoy the variety of waterfront bars and restaurants – all perfect for watching the ‘Magnificent Seven’ attempt their abseil challenge!"
