University launches new Portsmouth Football Club scholarship for local young people

The University of Portsmouth has launched a new scholarship through its partnership with Portsmouth Football Club to inspire and support local young people to achieve their potential.

The Portsmouth Football Club Scholarship will award £9,000 to those aged under 25 from Portsmouth or the Isle of Wight, who are either the first in their family to progress to higher education or have a household income of less than £25,000.

£3,000 a year will go towards undergraduate course fees for a maximum of three years, and students will also get the opportunity to gain valuable work experience at the football club.

Mark Caitlin, CEO of Portsmouth Football Club said: “We are delighted to be able to work with the University of Portsmouth to support students as part of the Portsmouth FC scholarship programme. Education is incredibly important and something that should be available to all – regardless of background or income, it’s something we are extremely passionate about.”

The University is also offering £5,000 to high achieving individuals from underrepresented backgrounds who are on track to achieve AAA in their A levels (or equivalent) through its new Best Begins Scholarship.

£3,000 will be paid in the first year of study, followed by £1,000 for each subsequent year as long as requirements are met.

The scholarship will support students to break through barriers to develop their skills and knowledge, and inspire fellow students by becoming an ambassador for University, to encourage others to progress to higher education.

Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Graham Galbraith said: “As a University, we are committed to successfully widening participation and promoting inclusiveness and opportunities for all. These scholarships will allow us to help engage students, regardless of their background, in life changing opportunities so that they can reach their full potential.”
